When I watched the below video for the first time I felt nervous for our condemned friend, expecting someone to walk into frame with a shitty knife of some description and mercilessly hack at his throat.
But then I was surprised and relieved at the quick kill delivered by the guy to the right of screen. And I realised, no revulsion, no shock, no grimace, no horror. And what does that say? Has a Mexican’s life become so cheap and meaningless to me that the death of this man means so little?
I have never found myself disliking a person purely based on their ethnicity. I may look at an unknown individual and profile them based on their appearance and commonly held stereotypes as a method of gauging the risk of danger to myself or those with me, but this is a natural and instinctual process, essential to self preservation. So it isn’t that he is Mexican that I feel nothing for him.
Is it de-sensitisation? Have I seen so much gore and violence from around the world that I am no longer shocked at a quick and merciful execution? Well, I’m sure that if the victim was someone I knew, even someone I didn’t like, I’d be bothered. So I have to say that I think it is more about the situation.
This guy is dead because he was a small fish in a big pond with very ruthless bottom feeders. He could have stayed up near the surface, and lived an honest life, but he decided to delve into the darker undercurrents. Once he did that, whether a week before, a month, a year, he was already dead. He chose to end his own life. And let’s be realistic here, this guy got off easy.
